| Program Description: | Colorado Supply Study
Colorado DOE Grant The 2004 Department of Energy (DOE) grant to the State of Colorado through the Western Governors' Association (WGA) took a four-pronged approach to increasing biomass utilization. The four approaches included: education, feasibility studies, a co-firing project, and a biomass supply study. Biomass Supply Study The biomass supply study is referred to as the Colorado Biomass Assessment & Regional Knowledgebase, or BARK. Since a reliable supply of biomass must be assured before investing in a biomass utilization project, a research effort was undertaken to document the locations of large supplies of woody biomass and demand opportunities. This work was conducted by Kurt Mackes and Elaine Hughes of Colorado State University in conjunction with US Forest Service and Colorado State Forest Service personnel. Using GIS data at the county level, the researchers mapped the locations of fuels reduction projects that had occurred in the past decade. These areas represented areas with a potential opportunity for biomass projects resulting from a large source of woody biomass. The work focused primarily on Routt, Grand and Jackson Counties in Northern Colorado. Web Address The results of the Supply Study are available on the BARK website at: http://csfs.colostate.edu/cowood/bark.html. The Woody Biomass Utilization Database is a project of the Western Governors' Association
designed to increase awareness of the use of biomass resources for economic development and
environmental sustainability. Program objectives highlighted include biomass energy and
heating activities, education programs, and projects and technologies involving biomass
residue resulting from forest health treatments to reduce wildfire hazard risk.
