The Woody Biomass Utilization Database is a project of the Western Governors' Association designed to increase awareness of the use of biomass resources for economic development and environmental sustainability. Program objectives highlighted include biomass energy and heating activities, education programs, and projects and technologies involving biomass residue resulting from forest health treatments to reduce wildfire hazard risk.

Program Type
Biopower - converting biomass to electric power, with various technologies including burning biomass residues to produce steam to spin a turbine generator
Biomass Co-firing - a method of turning biomass into electricity by burning wood with coal in high-efficiency coal boilers
Biomass Densification - technologies other than manufacturing wood pellets, such as logging slash compaction, torrefaction, and pyrolysis, that "densify" woody biomass by reducing its water and air content and thereby reducing transportation costs
Biomass Science - studies to advance the science relating to biomass utilization and to fill holes in our collective knowledge of issues relating to biomass utilization
Biomass Thermal Heat - examples of buildings using woody biomass for indoor heat with a wood boiler and storage for hot water heating
Cellulosic Ethanol/Biofuel - projects which use wood as a feedstock for creating biofuels
CHP (Combined Heat and Power) or Cogeneration - converting biomass to energy in an integrated heat and biopower production facility
Education Programs - community outreach, classroom and college resources, conferences and workshops
Feasibility Studies - studies to determine economic feasibility of converting to biomass from fossil fuel; factors include: location and characteristics of supply, cost/benefit analysis, siting, infrastructure and operations requirements
Manufacturing Wood Pellets - projects which create wood pellets for fuel from waste wood and sawdust
Small Diameter Wood Utilization - companies/projects producing products from small diameter wood materials
Supply Studies - resource assessments of locations of fuels treatment projects or logging activities which can supply large quantities of wood for biomass
